About our Department
The Middle Township Police Department was established in 1958, consisting of three oficers. Today the Police Department consists of (52) fifty two sworn law enforcement officers, (8) eight Police, Fire, Rescue and 911 Communications Operators, (1) one evidence clerk and (5) five secretaries.
The Police Department patrols an area of over (72) square miles, protecting a year round population of over 18,000 with an estimated daytime population in excess of 30,000. Additionally due to our locatin at the Jersey Shore, Middle Township connects with several shore towns, Avalon, Stone Harbor, North Wildwood and Wildwood City, thus causing our summer seasonal population to be in excess of 65,000. The Police Department initiates and/or responds to over (45,000) calls for service each year.
The Police Department is comprised of a Chief of Police, an Administrative Captain, an Operations Captain and two Lieutenants. A Detective Division that includes a Detective Sergeant and five detectives. A School Resource Officer Unit comprised of two officers, one assigned to the Middle Township High School, protecting a population of over 1,200 students and staff, and the other supplied via a contract with the Cape May County Vocational Technical High School protecting a population of over 700 students and staff. The Police Department also has a three member Street Crimes Unit. This unit operated in a plain clothes capacity and investigates "quality of life issues and crimes" and narcotics investigations. The backbone of the Police Department is the Patrol Division, this Division consists of (36) officers broken down into four patrol squads each under the direction of a Sergeant, with a Corporal and seven Patrol Officers.
The Police Department also maintains other units within the Agency. The members of these units undergo additional extensive training to be proficient n the duties and assignments. These duties are above and beyond the assigned Officers normal assignments as either Patrol Officers, Detectives or Administrators. These units include:
| A fully equipped DIVE team, with (8) team members utilizing 2 boats |
| A Police Motorcycle Unit, with (3) Harley Davidson motorcyles and one ATV |
| A Police Honor Guard |
| A Community Neighborhood Watch Program |
| A DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program with (6) instructors |
| A Hostage Negotiation Team |
Additionally, the Middle Township Police Department maintained a fully equipped 10 man SWAT team, utilizing this team for the past 20 years. In 2007 a Cape May County Regional SWAT team was formed, encompassing personnel from all Cape May County Police Departments. Middle Township continues to furnish (8) officers to this team and is the home of the North Team.
